Our Story
Black Ram Sound is an arts & media company founded by musician, producer, artist, and archivist Evan Haywood in 2016. We have grown from our roots as a private press record label into a multifaceted creative organization devoted to supporting artistic innovators representing diverse disciplines, with a lot of help from a tight-knit community of artists and musicians in Michigan. The Black Ram logo was hand-drawn by Shingo Brown and developed into a linocut print by Rachelle Baker, marking our first collaboration with groundbreaking visual artists.
The Black Ram Treehouse is an all-purpose music studio in Ann Arbor, MI, opened by Evan Haywood in 2020 to support the recording, mixing, and mastering of a wide variety of sounds. Evan was inspired to build the studio after spending time with his late friend & collaborator Lee “Scratch” Perry in Jamaica and visiting the ruins of the legendary Black Ark studio in 2019. Our reputation quickly grew as a sanctuary for musicians to come together and complete ambitious projects. We have continued to cultivate an environment defined by its welcoming energy, efficient workflow, and warm sound. All genres welcome!
